A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
